Alice's Story

ROCK HILL - This is to recognize and celebrate the life of Alice (Hempstead) Ackerson, a wife, nurse, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, whose life ended on July 17, 2017.
Born in Binghamton, Alice lived for a time in Gulf Summit, a member of a local Erie Railroad family. Her father, Alex Hempstead, moved the family to Hancock, where he was the station agent for the railroad.
Alice had an active life completing her education at Hancock Central School, and then her nursing degree at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.
While in Hancock, she met her future husband, William D. Ackerson of Sands Creek.
After he finished service in Europe in the Army Air Corps in World War II, Bill returned to marry Alice, (1947) and then pursued a career in public education. Alice went back to school in the late 60's to secure her bachelor's degree in the SUNY system. In each community, Alice continued her nursing career, finishing at the BOCES School of Practical Nursing at Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, where she was the chief instructor.
Along with their active leadership in St James' Episcopal Church, Alice and Bill were especially active in the Otschodela Council, Boy Scouts of America, where she served summers as the camp nurse and where both served on the executive board.
She is survived by her son, G. Scott Ackerson (Melinda, deceased 9/24/16) of Fort Mill, South Carolina, and their sons, her grandson, Eric C. Ackerson (Jihad) of Charlotte, North Carolina and great-granddaughters, Jala and Kaden; and her grandson, Joel P. Ackerson of Sparks, Nevada.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary E "Betsy" Smith (Peter) of Lancaster Pennsylvania; and their children, granddaughter, Laura (Wadih) Ettabakh of Seoul, South Korea; and her grandson, Daniel Smith (Kim) of Charlottesville, Viginia. And she is survived by her son, William David Ackerson (Janice Thomas) of North Adams, Massachusetts; by her sister, Helen (Stuart) Hanna of Woodbridge, Virginia; by her brother, Frank A "Pete" Hempstead (Vicky) of Deposit; and by many nieces and nephews from the Ackerson and Hempstead families
She is predeceased by her husband, William D. "Bill" Ackerson of Hancock and Oneonta and Lancaster, Pennsylvania (2004); her parents, Alex and Jenny Hempstead of Hancock; her sister, Betty Wood (Grant, "Woody") of Deposit and Woodbridge, Viriginia; and by her brother, John "Jack" (Alma) Hempstead of Redding/Red Bluff, California.
