Arlean's Story

ONEONTA - Arlean M. Norton, 90, passed away peacefully on Jan. 22, 2018, at the Home of The Good Shepherd in Malta, with her son and daughter at her side.
She was born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, on May 26, 1927, the daughter of Michael and Caroline Zagata.
A lifelong resident of Oneonta, she graduated from OHS with the Class of 1944 and was the loving wife of the late John H. (Jack) Norton.
She worked at Oneonta Savings & Loan for many years, managed the J. Gordon Downie Insurance Agency for 30 years and then worked part-time for 10 years in Senator Jim Seward's Oneonta office.
She volunteered for many years with various Oneonta organizations including Beta Sigma Phi Women's Sorority, Fox Hospital Auxiliary, Oneonta High School Alumni, and St. Mary's Church, in various capacities. Many others benefited from her generosity, love of people, and her desire to create and share her many talents.
She is survived by her son, John M. (Jack) Norton of Mechanicville; daughter, Jan and husband, Chris Coogan of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; two loving grandsons, Sean M. Coogan of Arlington, Virginia and Joseph H. Coogan of Fairfax, Virginia; many other loving nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 26, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta.
Burial will take place in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
