ROXBURY- August F. "Gus" Schneider, 89, a long time resident of Roxbury, died at his residence on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017. He formerly lived in College Point and Richmond Hill.
Gus was born on Aug. 10, 1928, at Richmond Hill, the son of Charles and Dorothy (Henke) Schneider.
He married Lois Schaefer on Aug. 5, 1950, at College Point. Lois died in 1989.
He attended RCA Institute in New York City. Gus worked for EDO at College Point, during the Korean War working on sonar for the United States Navy. He later was employed in the real estate business and for 21 years he was a police officer at SUNY Cobleskill. He was a member of the Sons of the Civil War.
He was known for his knowledge of antique cars and was a owner of many antique cars that he truly enjoyed.
Gus is survived by a daughter, Lois Buschel; son Theodore Schneider, step son, Leonard Schaefer; longtime friend, Liz Merwin; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three nieces and a sister, Dorothy Brockner.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Committal prayers will follow in the Roxbury Cemetery.
Calling hours for family and friends will be held at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Donations in memory of Gus may be made to the Roxbury Fire Department Ambulance Fund.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
