ONEONTA - Brian James Mathewson, 50, of Oneonta, went to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday June 17, 2017. Brian was surrounded by the love of his family when he passed following a courageous battle with cancer.
Brian was a graduate of Oneonta High School, Class of 1985 and SUNY Delhi, Class of 1987, where he received training in food services.
Brian loved to travel and moved from Oneonta to Florida, California and eventually back to Oneonta to open and manage an Applebee's Restaurant.
Many knew Brian from his time at Country Club Imports over the last 11 years where he was a decorated salesman and dedicated co-worker. Everyone that knew Brian was aware of the way that he loved and cared for every person he interacted with. Brian was a fun-loving, family-loving guy who enjoyed time with those he cared about sitting around a campfire or cooking a large Sunday meal.
Brian was a member of the Freemasons of Otsego and faithfully attended his church, HillCity in Oneonta.
Brian is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Cooley) Mathewson of Oneonta; his stepchildren, who he considered his own, Amy L. Rathmell and her husband, Pastor Joshua E. Rathmell of Oxford and Bradley R. Oliver of Norwich. He is also survived by his parents, Peter and Diana Mathewson of Oneonta; his two brothers and their wives, Peter and Mary Jane Mathewson of Watertown, Michael and Jessica Mathewson of Sacramento, California; and his nieces and nephews, Joshua Mathewson of Nashville, Tennessee and Jonathan and Christina of Watertown.
Brian will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Friends are invited to greet the family from 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, June 21, at the HillCity Church, 1796 County Road 48, Oneonta.
A funeral service will take place immediately following calling hours at 4 p.m.
Burial will take place in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta at the convenience of the family.
