ONEONTA - Carol Higgins passed away quietly during the early morning of July 6, 2017, while at home. She finally found peace with the Lord following a prolonged struggle with illness.
Carol was born on Feb. 25, 1951, to the late Edward and Sophie Szczepanski in Brooklyn.
Carol is survived by her husband, John D. Higgins; son, Jonathan and his wife, Sandy (Sobey) of Albany, son, Michael and his wife, Camila (Panissa) of Charlotte, North Carolina, son, Brian and his wife, Lisa (Howell) and granddaughters, Abby and Erin of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Surviving siblings are three brothers, Edward, Frederick and Peter; and one sister, Justine.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Walter, Robert and John.
During the 1970's, Carol was a sales representative for Ellison Products out of Fairfield, New Jersey. In the late 1980's, she decided to follow her dream to become a gemologist. She graduated from the Gemology Institute of America in NYC and opened a small jewelry store in Oneonta called Higgins Jewelers Inc. After being seriously injured in two car accidents, she was unable to work due to chronic pain.
Carol was a member of the Community Gospel Church in Oneonta and also spent time being blessed by Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. She was a dedicated volunteer for hospice in Oneonta. She loved animals, which were great companions during her latter years. She enjoyed the outdoors.
Carol was a kind and caring person to her family and friends, always putting them before herself. She will be deeply missed as a loving wife, mother, sister and friend. May she rest at eternal peace.

There are no calling hours. A private celebration of Carol's life will be held at the family home on Tuesday, July 11.
