Charles Bowman Groff

SIDNEY - Charles Bowman Groff was born July 12, 1920 in Cooperstown. His parents were Stanley and Mary and he grew up on the family farm in Schenevus.
Charles graduated from Worcester High School in 1939 and attended Delhi Tech in 1940, taking up building trades. In 1944, Charles joined the Carpenters Union in Oneonta, and during the war years he worked on several large wartime projects, the largest being the first atomic plant in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Charles married Eleanor Ledger, a teacher at Schenevus High School, in June 1943 and in the summer of 1944, they moved to Bainbridge. Charles worked for various contractors for a few years before starting his own building business under the name Quality Builders and built many of the houses in Bainbridge and Sidney, and the hospital in Sidney.
Retiring in 1973, Charles and Eleanor bought a winter home in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, that they enjoyed for several years. After Eleanor passed away in April 2001, Charles met Jewel Monroe in 2002, in Port Saint Lucie, Florida and they were married in September 2003. They shared many winters in Florida and summers in Sidney. Their final years were spent in Sidney, and Jewel passed away in September 2016.

So sorry to see Chuck has gone. Dana I am sorry for your loss. It has been many years since we have seen each other, but we all had grand times on Lewis Street.

My brothers and I spent many good times as kids with Dana. Chuck and Ellie were such wonderful friends. We will always cherish our childhood memories.
