ONEONTA - David J. Hamwey, 94, passed away July 29, 2017, at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown.
He was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Mount Vision, the son of John and Grace (Peters) Hamwey.
He graduated from Oneonta High School with the Class of 1942.
David was a United States Army veteran.
He married Margaret Cooper on Sept. 24, 1944, in Oneonta.
David and Margaret owned and operated the Riverview Motel and Grist Mill Country Store for many years. He was also employed with the State University College at Oneonta in the maintenance department, retiring in 1990. David was a professional woodworker and cabinet maker, building and customizing his homes and businesses.
He and his wife enjoyed riding his motorcycle whenever possible.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Hamwey of Oneonta; children, David J. Hamwey Jr. of Graham, Washington, Timothy A. Hamwey of Worcester, Janice M. (Bruce) Smith of Oneonta; grandchildren, Jason, Jared, Jamie, Elizabeth, Morgan, Bella and Eric; great-grandchildren,Nathan, Harley and Brooke; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by seven siblings.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service at noon, Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle officiating. Interment will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
