ONEONTA - Dave was called home to be with the Lord following a short battle with recurrent cancer.
Dave was a 20 plus year cancer survivor and the family is thankful they were given the gift of 20 additional years with Dave.
A lifelong Oneonta area resident, Dave grew up in West Oneonta.
Dave recently retired from the Oneonta City School District after more than 30 years of service. He enjoyed working there and made many friends from his work family.
Dave was an avid canoe enthusiast. He was a regular participant in the annual General Clinton Canoe Regatta, a 70 mile endurance race. Dave had several canoe partners over the years including John Harrison with whom he took first place more than once.
Dave loved being outdoors. He took special interest in hunting, fishing, gardening, camping, campfires and grilling outdoors. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Dave is survived by the love of his life, Beth, of 35 years and her parents, Fran and Marty Northrup; two daughters, Melissa (Rob) Oakley and Carah (Kevin) Manning; granddaughters, Aubrey and Kierah; one grandson, Connor; two sisters, Joyce Woodrow (Gary) and Janet Speranzi-Cannon (Larry); several aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces. Dave also is survived by many close friends.
Dave was predeceased by his mom and dad, Laura and Frank Knapp; grandparents on both sides; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and his beloved pet dog, Roxy and cat, Knapper, he adopted after Dave's father passed.
Friends and family may call from 3 to 4 p.m., Friday, Jan. 5, at the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta. A short memorial service will begin at 4 p.m.
A celebration of Life will occur in the spring around Canoe Regatta time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
