David McCumber

December 30, 1946 - October 17, 2018

David McCumber ELIZABETHTOWN, Ill. - During the evening hours of Oct. 17, 2018, David Edwin McCumber passed peacefully with his wife of 50 years by his side.
Born in Prattsville, on Dec. 30, 1946, Dave was a spirited man who graduated from Gilboa-Conesville High School in 1964. After graduation Dave entered the Army that same year and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. It was here that his relationship with Sandra Kay Lafferty was sparked. The two communicated via letters while he was halfway across the world. When he returned to the states in 1967 the two were wed and remained together until his death this year. Dave and Sandy raised their three children in Delhi, where they all graduated from Delaware Academy.
Dave worked for NYSEG from 1973 until 2003 when he retired. It is very likely that you saw him at the top of a power line at some point during that time.
During his down time Dave utilized his green thumb and eye for design to create beautiful gardens and innovative landscapes around his Delhi home. Dave also loved spending time with his grandchildren, all of whom received a silly nickname from him and enjoyed bonding time during nature walks and swimming in the ponds on the property. Dave never knew a stranger and had a joke for every occasion. Everywhere he went he left with a new friend. An outdoorsman and adventurer, Dave, along with his wife moved around a bit following their retirement to chase new dreams and help care for family, spending time in both Florida and Illinois. Dave was predeceased by his father, John; mother, Gertrude; granddaughter, Amanda; and brother, Franklyn.
Dave is survived and celebrated by his wife of 50 years Sandra Lafferty McCumber, Elizabethtown, Illinois; son, Robert (JoAnne), Lexington, Virginia; daughters, Jodi, (David), Delhi and Kimberly (Michael), Christiansburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Joshua, Lindsay, Sarah and Emma; stepfather, Leo Day, Prattsville; and sister, Rosemary, Prattsville.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Elizabethtown. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to Enfield Rehabilitation and Healthcare, 408 Wilson St., Enfield, IL 62835 where Dave spent his last years and received compassionate and outstanding care.

Dave was a delight to work with at the NYSEG Hamden office. He always wore a smile and looked for the positive things in life. So glad to be part of his work family.
