David's Story

Text size

ONEONTA - It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved David M. Ruggles Sr.
He spent his life being a devoted husband, father, and more recently, grandfather. He was also a friend to so many, and he always had a smile to share with everyone who crossed his path.
Those who knew him can attest to his beautiful and enormous smile, as well as his kindness, compassion, and absolute strength - even as he faced his own struggles.
Dave enjoyed any and all activities that had to do with being outdoors and being with his family: hunting and fishing, camping and hiking, and even working outside. Some of our earliest memories of our husband and father involve those weekend-long camping trips, and other wonderful vacations.
He also enjoyed helping others whenever he could, and we always knew we could call on Dad whenever we had a question or a problem. In fact, he was a dad to people who weren't even his own children. He was there for everyone who needed him. No amount of words could ever do his life justice.
He was taken from us too soon, and we hope you all can remember the many good things he did in his too-short life. We have a million amazing memories with him, and we will cherish those forever.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon, of 37 years. They fell in love as teenagers and created a love that was absolutely unbreakable.
He leaves behind four children of whom he was eternally proud, as well as their spouses and his many grandchildren, Stephanie and Michael Rife, and their kids, Krysta, Lorynna, Austin, and Hunter; Rachel and Alan Hamilton, and their kids, AJ, Angelina, and Isabelle; Amanda and her fiancé, Josh Paulson; and DJ (David Jr.) and Desiree Ruggles, and their children, Addison and Liam. He will also be forever missed by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
We thank you all for being his friend and for enjoying his smile as much as we did.
David was predeceased by his parents, Gilbert and Esther Ruggles.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 24, at Bookhout Funeral Home on Main Street in Oneonta. Any and all are welcome to speak on Dave's behalf starting at 6 p.m. that night. There will also be a celebration of his life at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 25, in the upper pavilion in Wilber Park in Oneonta.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society on behalf of our dad.
