ONEONTA - Dennis James "Shorty" Kearney, 62, of Oneonta, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2017.
Dennis was born on Feb. 9, 1955, in Oneonta, a son of the late Robert E. and Helen (Root) Kearney.
He grew up in Oneonta and attended Oneonta High School. He then went on to study auto mechanics at SUNY Delhi.
Following his graduation from Delhi, Shorty enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
In his spare time, Shorty loved working on cars, which led him to having part ownership in a race car. When the opportunity presented itself, Dennis would grab his fishing pole and spend the day fishing. He had the distinctive laugh of an Irishman and will be deeply missed by one and all.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Paula Kearney; his four children, Robert (Brandi) Kearney, Curtis (Tess) Kearney, Michelle Kearney, and Denny Kearney; his stepfather, Ralph Dawson; his brother, Timothy Kearney; and his two sisters, Pat (Bill) Moore and Lark (Keith) Byam. He is also survived by family friends, Rose Millias and Steve Kelly; many in-laws, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, cousins, and loyal friends. His love of family and friends knew no bounds.
He was predeceased by his parents; his uncle, Orris "Pudge" Root; and his aunt, Daphna Crain.
Friends and family may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, during which time his family will receive guests.
