Donald William's Story
NEWPORT, R.I, - Donald William Zuercher, 90, passed away unexpectedly, in his sleep, at his home on June 5, 2017.
He was born Aug. 1, 1926, in Oneonta, the son of Thomas Zuercher and Bertha Mae Govern.
He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1944. On Aug. 1, he joined the Navy and proudly served his country in World War II.
Don was a photographer and owner of the Viking Studio in Oneonta from 1960 to 1976 when he moved to Newport.
He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Bertha; stepmother, Grace Zuercher; and a special friend, John Marx.
He is survived by his sisters, Laura Zummo of Vestal and Carol (James) Roe of Laurens; two nephews, Jason (Amber) Zummo of Matthews, North Carolina and Wayne (Lisa) Hymers Jr. of East Meredith; one great-nephew, A.J. Zummo; four great-nieces, Mikayla Zummo, Lyndsay, Bailee and Kacie Hymers; and many wonderful friends in Newport.
At 84, Don purchased a computer and taught himself to use it. He was in constant contact with his sisters through email and Facebook.
He was an avid reader who loved his books and music. Don was a loving, gentle soul with a kind heart.
Arrangements were entrusted to Winfield and Sons Funeral Home, Scituate, Rhode Island. At Don's request, there was no service.
