ONEONTA - Doris Cole, 97, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017.
The daughter of Jesse and Madge (Cox) Cronkite, she was born Dec. 20, 1919, on the family farm on Dutch Hill in the Town of Milford.The family later moved to 1 East End Ave. in Oneonta.
Doris was a graduate of Oneonta High School, Class of 1937 and then was employed as cashier at the Palace Theater where she met Newton Cole. They were married on March 2, 1941, and lived in Oneonta. In 1948, they moved to Franklin where she was a stay at home mother and later worked as a clerk in the shipping department at Scintilla for many years.
In her younger years, she loved swimming especially on Otsego Lake. Her favorite pastime was fishing in Ouleout Creek. She loved to read and make many craft projects for her family. She enjoyed bingo and gave many of her winnings as gifts. Doris loved nature and kept a bird diary.
She was very independent, still riding her bicycle in her late seventies. Doris was a child of the Great Depression and was thrifty and could repair anything from almost nothing. Due to declining health at the age of 90, she moved to Otsego Manor and her family thanks her kind and loving caretakers and friends there.
Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and her pets.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Kiser Crippen and husband, Michael of Milford and The Villages, Florida; her son, Richard Cole of Franklin; and her youngest daughter, Linda Ruling and companion, Richard Chamberlain of East Meredith; and her former daughter-in-law, Anne Cole of Laurens. She was dearly loved by her grandchildren, Jamie Kiser (Teresa), Michael Kiser (Tiffany), Elizabeth Sliwa (Achim), Richard Cole, Dacia Strong (Trevor), Sean Strong, Nicole Strong (Jonathan), Jeremy Strong (Shannon), Michelle Lewis, Dennis and Matthew Crippen. Doris is also survived by her great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; cousin, Helen Cyran of Los Angeles, California; and sister-in-law, Marion Cole Hanor of Oneonta.
She was predeceased by Newton Cole; two twin sisters, Ruby Haines Powell and Ruth M. Cook; three brothers, Stanley, Arthur and Howard Cronkite; nephews, Tom Haines, Roger Cronkite, Albert Haines and Norville "Duffy" Cook; and niece, Nancy Cook Bormann.
The family will be present for calling hours from 1 to 2:30 p.m;, Friday, July 14, at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. Immediately following there will be a graveside burial service at the Jesse and Madge Cronkite burial site in the Milford Cemetery, Milford with the Rev. Frank Westcott officiating.
Flowers will be accepted but those who wish may make a memorial contribution to the charity of one's choice.
