Text size

STAMFORD - Dorothy Ann Unruh Bloodgood, 93, passed away on June 13, 2017.
Born Aug. 3, 1923, in Hoboken, New Jersey, she moved to Bogota, New Jersey in 1926 where she lived most of her life and graduated from Bogota, New Jersey High School with the Class of 1941. After attending Columbia University she was hired by G.M. Basford Industrial Advertising Agency during World War II to pursue her passion for advertising.
Dorothy was also active in the American Red Cross along with her mother during World War II.
After the war, Dorothy took a position with Food Topics magazine in the McGraw Hill Publishing Co. building in NYC, and held various positions until she retired to marry the love of her life, Carlton, on Easter Sunday in 1952.
In later years, Dorothy and her husband Carlton became avid collectors and dealers of antique post cards and hosted a post card show in Stamford for 22 years.
Dorothy loved to research and share family history. She was the family historian and put together several books on the history of each family along with pictures and historical information. This is something we will all treasure.
Through the post cards and her love of writing, Dorothy published two books, "A Post Card Portrait with memorabilia of the Queen of the Catskills Grand Hotel Era 1883-1942 Stamford, Delaware County NY," and "Post Card Portrait of John Burroughs Literary Naturalist."
The New Jersey towns of Hoboken and Bogota as well as Stamford, were all close to her heart especially the memories of her childhood. Many of her stories of her early years have been put to paper to relive and enjoy. During Dorothy's senior year at Bogota High School, she had the opportunity to interview Lowell Thomas the author of "With Lawrence in Arabia" in his NYC NBC office where he inscribed to her "Here's wishing you a life of high adventure!" Dorothy wrote on Jan. 5, 2000 I have had a life of high adventure especially in the international world of post cards, a true study of history and geography plus more.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Godfrey and Mathilda (Cross) Unruh; and her son, John Godfrey Cornell Bloodgood and is survived by her husband of 65 years, Carlton F. Bloodgood, a native of Stamford; daughter, Margaret A Bloodgood of New Jersey; and granddaughter, Jacqueline.
Graveside services will be held at noon, Monday, June 19, in Stamford Cemetery.
Contributions in Dorothy's memory may be made to the Stamford Historical Society, c/o Village of Stamford, 84 Main St., Stamford, NY 12167, or Bogota Public Library, 375 Larch Ave., Bogota, NJ 07603.
