J. Michael Neander, MD

November 25, 1950 - July 12, 2018

ONEONTA - With his loving family at his side, Dr. John Michael Neander passed away on July 12, 2018, at Albany Medical Center.
The son of Dr. John Frederick and Annabelle Neander, Michael was born in NYC and grew up in Pearl River.
He was a graduate of Mount Hermon High School in Massachusetts (1968); the University of Rochester (1972); and the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (1976). Following attainment of his medical degree, he completed his specialty medical training at Albany Medical College (AMCH) (Internal Medicine; Adult Psychiatry) and Georgetown University: Children's National Medical Center, Washington, D.C. (Fellow: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry).
Board certified in child and adolescent psychiatry, Dr. Neander held private practices in Washington, D.C. and Oneonta. In addition to his selfless and deep dedication to the care of others, Dr. Neander found relaxation and joy through listening to classical music and participating with various choral groups across the region.
Father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Dr. Neander will be deeply missed by his two sons, Mark of Oneonta and Erik (Jessica Santos-Neander; grandchildren, Philip and Corbin) of Tampa, Florida; their mother, Laurie of Oneonta; his sisters, Wendy Neander (Tom Grauman and children, Jan, Nels and LucĂ­a), British Columbia, Canada; Julie Neander (Gordon Leppig with children, Kai and Sylvia), Mckinleyville, California and Susan Neander (Stephen Carey and daughter, Cora), Arcata, California; as well as his cherished companion dog, Bella.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m.,Thursday, Aug. 30, in the Glenwood Cemetery, Main Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen Fournier leading the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a tax deductible donation toward one or more of the following causes that were close to Dr. Neander.
