MARGARETVILLE - Jacob Alan Rosa, known to all as Jake, passed away suddenly on Jan. 5, 2018, the result of a tragic accident that occurred as he was helping a friend.
Jake was born on Oct. 22, 1975, in Kingston and grew up in Dry Brook.
A graduate of Margaretville Central School, he was the owner and operator of Dry Brook Customs.
Jake was a New York State Certified Logger who was named the 2010 Outstanding Logging Operator by the Northeast Logging Association, a regional trade association representing more than 2,000 members in the Northeast and Lake states. He was also a past national champion of the Game of Logging. Jake obtained an extensive amount of training and education in his chosen field of logging and forestry.
While logging was his profession, hunting was his passion. Jake was an avid big game hunter his entire life. He was well-known locally for his hunting and shooting skills. He hunted not only extensively in the Catskills, but also in the Adirondacks and Canada. He particularly loved hunting moose in Newfoundland.
Jake's love of heavy equipment, especially Brockway trucks, came from his maternal grandfather, Morris Slavin. He got his love for hunting and the outdoors from his father, Alan and paternal grandfather, Lester Rosa.
Jake served the community as a Town of Middletown Councilman and member of the board of directors of the Catskill Forest Association. He received the Outstanding Republican Service Award in 2017. He was also active in a number of local, state, and regional organizations.
He is survived by his partner in life, Theresa Balcom; his stepdaughter and her husband, Savannah and Brad Fischer; along with his granddaughter, Ellie. Also surviving are his parents, Alan and Debbie Rosa; sister, Abigayle and husband, Casey Bates; brother, Ryan and wife, Allie; grandparents, Mildred Rosa and Charlie and Eleanor Mager; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Known for his smile and booming laugh, Jake was a friend to all. He spent his life always helping others and will be sorely missed. He left so very many of us with the greatest gifts of his friendship and laughter.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 12, in the auditorium at Margaretville Central School. The family invites all of Jake's friends to attend a celebration of his life immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jake's name may be made to the Catskill Forest Association, P.O. Box 336 Arkville, NY 12406.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
