James V. Hurst Sr.
June 22, 1927 - August 18, 2017
Jim was born June 22, 1927, in Hoboken, New Jersey, son of the late James and Lena (Borelli) Hurst.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II.
On June 2, 1951, he married the former Edna Smith in Emerson, New Jersey.
Jim was an upholsterer for Sleepable Sofas in Lodi, New Jersey, and for himself in Hamden. He never had to advertise because the quality of his work spread near and far.
He was a member of the St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Delhi.
Jim really enjoyed playing the saxophone. In his later years, he enjoyed golfing with his friends and loved watching the New York Yankees.
Jim is survived by his loving family, his wife, Edna (Smith) Hurst; children, James (Jody) V. Hurst Jr., Rice Lake, Wisconsin; Edna Katherine "Kathy" (John) Frey of Statesboro, Georgia, Colleen Gagliostro of Washington Township, New Jersey; William Thomas (Joan) Hurst of Tinton Falls, New Jersey; grandchildren, Kyle, Kelly, James (Rachel), Erin, Katlin, Teresa, Anthony, Emma, Molly, Morgan; great-grandchildren, James Liam, Quinn; sisters- in-law, Mary Ellen (Alan) Boatwright and Marion Hurst of Ramsey, New Jersey; brothers-in-law, Frank English of Casselberry, Florida; Gayle (Allan) Reynolds of Cocoa, Florida; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Hurst; and sister-in-law, Patricia English.
Family and friends are invited to call from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 21, at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 .m., Tuesday Aug. 22, at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 8 Franklin St., Delhi with the Rev. Edward J. Golding, officiating. Burial will be Wednesday, Aug. 23, in George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Road, Paramus, New Jersey with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jim's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.
