James S.'s Story
PAINTED POST - James S. Johnston Sr., 68, of Painted Post, passed away on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017, at Absolut Care at Three Rivers.
Jim was born Nov. 13, 1948, in Oneonta, to Harry S. and Doris V. (Upright) Johnston.
Jim graduated from Sidney High School in Sidney, in 1966. He enlisted in the Navy in 1967 and served aboard the USS Ticonderoga off the coast of Vietnam.
When he left the Navy, he worked briefly at the Corning Inc. facility in Oneonta, before returning to California. He worked at DeCarlos bakery in San Pedro, California, and was a partner in the Baja Liquor Store in Lakewood, California. He retired as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in the Spring Carrier annex and Carson post offices.
He enjoyed camping, bowling, golf, and, in his younger years, played baseball. He also enjoyed going on cruises and trips to Laughlin, Nevada, to the casinos.
Jim is survived by his wife of 27 years, Sheila (Carsok) Johnston of Washington, Maine; son, James S. (Andrea) Johnston Jr. of Post Falls, Idaho and grandsons, Daman and Jack Johnston; former wife, Judith (Robert) Reitter; mother, Doris V. Johnston of Addison; siblings, Christy (Hal) Sisson of Addison and Tony Johnston of Binghamton; brother-in-law, Phillip (Joanne) Darling of Bainbridge; and several nieces, nephews and cousins
He was predeceased by his father and sister, Nancy Darling.
Many thanks to all of the staff at Absolut Care at Three Rivers for their unfailing good humor and kindness in dealing with Jim for several years.
Family and friends are invited to call at Carpenter-Flint Funeral Home, 10 Wall St., Addison, from 1 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18, with a memorial service immediately following with the Rev. Mark Flandreau officiating.
