Janet "Ole" Jacobs

September 07, 1949 - August 30, 2018

Janet Ole Jacobs GILBERTSVILLE - Janet Jacobs passed away on Aug. 30, 2018, at Bassett Medical Center. She is now with her Lord and Savior.
Janet was "Ole" to most everyone who knew her. She was born Sept. 7, 1949, in the Bronx, to Theodor and Agnes Olsen. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. After a few years, her family moved to New City, to the home her family built together. She graduated from Clarkstown High School in 1967.
Ole went to SUNY at Oswego, first as a math major and then English.
In April of 1968, she met Duane "Jake" Jacobs when they were both teenagers, fell in love, and they were married on June 12, 1971, one week after she graduated from college. They moved to Gilbertsville, that summer and have lived there for 47 wonderful years. She started teaching at Franklin Central School and was there for nine years total when she decided that being home with children was where she needed to be. When the kids were older she began working for the U.S. Postal Service and finished a career of more than 30 years as post master in her favorite office, Gilbertsville.
In Gilbertsville she was known to many as a very giving and loving person. Ole was always there to provide a meal, send a card, take someone to an appointment, make a visit and was eager for any chance to babysit when someone needed help. She was an active member of the Gilbertsville Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years, serving on several committees, teaching Sunday school for many years, and taking on many other duties. Her faith was truly strong which was evident in the way she lived her life.
She joined the Gilbertsville Fire Department Auxiliary in 1971 and was an Otsego County Auxiliary member of the year. Ole was president of the Gilbertsville Community Fund which helps out people who have had fires or need help with medical travel expenses.
She loved to craft and garden. She was an accomplished primitive wool rug hooker and worked on several other crafts. Her gardens were her delight and she worked in them often.
Her passion soon became her grandchildren. It was not possible for her to pass by a kids clothing store or a toy rack without stopping. She loved being with them, playing, cooking, reading, doing puzzles and just being a grandma. It was a wonderful blessing for her and the grandchildren.
Ole is survived by her devoted husband and best friend of 47 years, Duane "Jake" Jacobs; her son, Lucas and wife, Darcelle of Schoharie and their children, Julianna, Isabella and Jackson; her daughter, Hannah (Jacobs) Fullam and husband, Gregory Fullam of Marlboro, Massachusetts, and their twin boys, Lleyton and Kristian; and her brother, Carl Olsen and his wife, Kari of Yorktown Heights. Also, she leaves a niece, Kathryn (Olsen) Piaquadio; and John Olsen, the children of her late brother, Jimmy and his wife, Harriet Chiaffi of Stony Point; and all the cousins.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris and a service of celebration of Ole's life will be at 10 a.m., Friday at the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville followed by interment at Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville or the Gilbertsville Community Fund, c/o her husband.
