CHERRY VALLEY - John Richard Hurley, known to his friends as "John Boy," passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 19, 2017. He was 62.
Born in Manhattan on Feb. 9, 1955, John spent his summers in Cherry Valley until permanently residing there in 1971.
John graduated from Cherry Valley Central in 1973. After graduation he was employed by Beach Nut, in addition to working on many farms including his wife's family farm. In 1975, he was employed by Remington Arms in Ilion, where he worked for 39 years and where his imprint will forever be, retiring in 2014. Upon retirement he said when asked, he was going to do what he wanted.
John loved many things including golfing, snowmobiling, bowling, boating, playing softball and basketball, but most of all, he loved spending time with loved ones and friends.
John was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather and brother. He loved being the life of the party, everyone's best friend and for some a partner in crime. John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Linda Hurley; his children, Curtis (Jennifer) Hurley, their sons, Anthony, Curtis Jr. (CJ) and Vincent, Brendan (Jennifer) Hurley, their son, Adam and daughter, Lilah, Cortney (Will) Hallada, their sons, Liam and Ansel; his sisters, Mary Hurley and Jackie Hurley, her son, Shawn; daughters, Christine and Karen; and brother, Robert (Mindy) Hurley; and daughter, Sarah.
John was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Ethel Hurley; brother, James Hurley; and sister, Lynn (Richard) O'Leary.
The family will be present for calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Ottman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Cherry Valley at 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 27. A reception in John's honor will follow services at the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club.
