Monica Anne O'Leary

MARYLAND - Monica was born Jan. 23, 1979, and was a bright light until Aug. 1, 2019, when she left this world surrounded by the love of family and friends. Monica courageously fought cancer for nearly eight years, but she didn't allow that to define her.
What meant most to Monica was her loving family, her daughter, Ella, parents, Mary and Josh, brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Erin, sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Graham, nieces and nephews, Xander, Gwyn, Jake, Mac and Poppy, and all of her extended family of loving aunts, uncles and cousins and her special grandmother, Betty.
Monica was an incredible mother to her daughter, Ella, who was the bright light of her life. Monica leaves behind so many loving friends, whose support for her over the years was unyielding.
Everyone who met Monica was touched by her in some way. It was Monica's wish for family and friends to not mourn her passing, but to celebrate her life. In keeping with that wish, a celebration of her life is being planned for a date to be announced in September.
Monica's family asks that anyone who wishes to make a donation do so to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care at

I met you on a beautiful summer day 22 years ago. You were just like that day, warm and bright and beautiful. We were instant friends and you stole my heart from the second we met. I will always remember you with the best memories of dancing and singing and sharing each others secrets. I love you and I will carry your light inside me always.

Monica, you were truly our high school girls group cool, hilarious, fun loving Big Sister. I’ll never forget the genuine love you have for everyone around you. Lucky for everyone you had an impression on-we learned the values of smiling through any storm, living in the moment, and loving unconditionally. Love you Monica. Miss you always.

I had the honor of working with Monica at O'Connor Hospital in Delhi, NY. I remember having lunch with her on her last day at the Shire and having such a deep meaningful conversation. Her writing and vision of life was one I will always remember.

I met Monica when she was a bright, bubbly, child of about four. She would not have remembered me, but I recall her as such a ray of sunshine. All my sympathy and prayers go out to her and her family at this sorrowful time.

I did not know Monica. I was sitting in the family room at Bassett while giving some of my mothers friends time with mom. I over heard some of Monica's friends talking about her life, her daughter Ella and how special she was. I prayed that God wrap his arms around her and grant her peace. Hearing them speak gave me comfort in my own situation and I thank God for that. May God grant you peace. May your happy memories of Monica comfort you during this difficult time. God Bless you all.

My memories of Monica were from her elementary years at Greater Plains. She always was smiling, loved to be creative, enjoyed life, treated her friendships well and was a shining light that everyone followed. My love and sympathy to the O’Leary family. She was a very unique and special person who will never be forgotten.

My heart is sad for all who loves Monica. I went to school with Monica when we were young. One memory I have from when we were young, was when she started in kindergarten and I was in first grade. I had always been the tallest girl and then Monica came and she beat me in height. It brings a smile to me even now after all these years. I’m sorry to learn of Monica’s battle with cancer. I wish the best for her daughter and family now. May God give you peace and comfort as you reflect on memories.❤️
