Paul's Story

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - Paul Anthony Marold Sr., 83, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017, at Vibra Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina.
He was born June 17, 1934, in Elkland, Pennsylvania, son of the late Joseph Marold and Florine (Davenport) Marold.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Freda (Buffard) Marold, who passed on Aug. 7, 2014.
Survivors include his two sons, Paul A. Marold Jr. and his wife, Luann of Dover, New Hampshire, and Terry Joe Marold and his wife, Margaret of Hudson; two brothers, James J. Marold and wife, Carol of Elkland, Pennsylvania and William L. Davenport and wife, Debbie of Knoxville, Pennsylvania; two nephews, James L. Marold and wife, Cathy of Greenfield, Massachusetts and Will Davenport and wife, Tamara of Waverly; niece, Heather McClaren and husband, Chris of Knoxville, Pennsylvania; and eight grandchildren, Paul, Lauren, Madison, Joseph, Travis, Alex, Devin, and Stephanie.
Paul graduated from Elkland High School in 1952. He went on to graduate from Mansfield State College in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in social sciences and biology. He then furthered his education by obtaining a master's degree in education from Elmira College in 1967.
He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany.
After serving in the military, he taught at Elmira city schools from 1962 to 1968. In 1969, he became Superintendent of Gilboa-Conesville Central School until 1977 when he became Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Otsego-Northern Catskills BOCES in Stamford, until his retirement in 1995.
Paul served as trustee/director for multiple organizations including Catskill Mountain Education Center in Stamford, Stamford Community Hospital and Stamford Golf Club. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club (Gilboa and Hobart) and an active member and former president of Hobart Rotary Club. He also was a 45-year member of the American Legion.
In 1996, Paul and his wife, Freda, retired to Murrells Inlet, and joined the Indian Wells Golf Club. Golfing was something he enjoyed very much and he was in various golf leagues into his late 70's.
He was a member of Surfside United Methodist Church and was active in many fundraising activities as well as the Men's Fellowship where he enjoyed sharing his faith and opinions of the world. Paul also enjoyed his daily visit to the Murrells Inlet VFW to commiserate with fellow veterans.
Paul took great pride in his relationship with his boys and will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
A celebration of Paul's life will be held at a later date.
