BRADENTON, Fla. - Randall Gene "Randy" McLaughlin, 71, of Bradenton, Florida, died very unexpectedly at home on May 9, 2018.
Randall was born March 23, 1947, to Richard and Margaret Hoyt McLaughlin in Sidney.
He graduated from Sidney Central School in June 1965. After completing barber school in Syracuse, he joined the U.S. Navy in August 1966. Randy spent one year in Adak Alaska, then shipped out to Vietnam with the Pacific Fleet, assigned to the Mauna Kea, a munition ship. He was released from duty and honorably discharged on May 15, 1970. Randy earned four Bronze Stars and the Meritorious Unit Commendation, among others.
He settled into a long haul truck driving career, moving families and furniture around the country. He also delivered boats for several years.
Randy retired young, got a dog (Bandit) and settled into retired life in Bradenton, Florida. He spent several years on the Honor Guard with the American Legion Post 24. The last six years Randy and his two best friends, Phyllis DeRock and Bandit, traveled around the country in a camper.
He leaves behind five brothers and one sister and their families. He also leaves behind many friends and neighbors who enjoyed his peaceful demeanor and sense of humor for many years.
Randy will be laid to rest at Sarasota National Cemetery with Military Honors at 1:30 p.m., Monday, May 21.
