COBLESKILL - Richard J. Schaefer, 74, of Cobleskill, passed away Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, at his home.
Rich was born Jan. 9, 1944, in Jamaica, Long Island, a son of Walter and Ruth (Peters) Schaefer.
He graduated from Bellport High School and later attended Suffolk County Community College.
Drafted into the United States Army, he served his country from 1965 to 1967 until he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
He returned to his hometown where he worked in the family business, Schaefer Business Machines in Patchogue.
He later moved his family upstate and began working for Kimberly-Scott Office Equipment. Eventually he opened BMS Enterprises and sold office equipment.
Later, Rich sold cars for Morgan Chevrolet; Aero Ford; Country Club Chevrolet; and recently he had been working at Gable Auto and Truck.
A life member of the NRA, Rich was a member of Cobleskill BPO Elks Lodge No. 2040 and enjoyed stock car racing, snowmobiling, archery, hunting and collecting knives, along with crafting them himself.
Survivors include his wife, Marie (Alver) Schaefer, to whom he was married Aug. 28, 1965; daughter, Michelle D. Schaefer (Steve) of Mariaville; son, Bryan R. Schaefer of Cobleskill; grandchildren, Jeremy (Candace) Bean, Tyler J. Briggs and Bradly Rhodes; great-grandchildren. Lillian Marie Bean and David William Bean; two sisters, Joanne T. Schaefer (Gary Staats) of San Diego, California and Gayle Schaefer of Jamestown. One niece and three nephews also survive.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Sherry Lee Schaefer Bean in 2015; and sister, Christine Hubbs in 2017.
Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 108 Chapel St., Cobleskill, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. Burial will be private.
