He was born July 28, 1949, in Cooperstown, a son of the late Richard P. "Dixie" O'Brien Sr. and Helen Gorney.

Richard eventually met Marcelle Joussé and the two were married in Schuyler Lake on July 13, 1991. She was the love of his life and she will miss him more than words can ever express.
