Robert N. "Ace"'s Story
ESPERANCE - Robert N. "Ace" Firestone of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, formerly of Esperance, passed away on Aug. 18, 2017, at home, with his wife and best friend, Luigi, by his side.
Ace was born June 28, 1931, in Brooklyn, to Ruth and Samuel Firestone. In 1939, his mom took him to see "The Wizard of Oz" at Radio City and his love for movies was born. In 1949, he accepted a job with Famous Studios working on cartoons. That job was interrupted when he joined the Marines in 1951, where he served until 1953 and remained in the Reserves until 1959. He returned to Famous Studios in 1954. He left for an editing job with Trans Film in 1955. In 1960, he joined Feld Productions and had the honor of editing "Project Hope" which won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short in 1961. Ace opened his own business in 1962 called Ace Editorial Services. When video tape began in 1973, he sold his business and joined the NYS Thruway where worked from 1974 to 1994.
On Aug. 5, 1989, he married Sandy and they built a house in Esperance in 1991 where they lived until 2016, when they moved to South Carolina to enjoy warmth, fun and sun instead of cold, ice and snow.
Ace loved the Brooklyn Dodgers, golf, cruises, listening to Frank Sinatra, watching classic movies, playing cribbage, and finding the perfect filet mignon to go with a glass of Jack Daniels. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons and his dog, Luigi.
Ace is survived by his wife, Sandy; sons, Andrew (Randy) of Highland Mills and James of Harriman; daughters, Debra (Steve) Sweeney of Shelburne, Vermont; his beloved grandsons, Daniel (Kim) of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey and Alexander (Devon) of Maywood, New Jersey; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother, Arthur and sister-in-law, Marie.
