SIDNEY - Robert F. Sklenarik, 91, passed away peacefully on Aug. 7, 2019, at the Veterans Home at Oxford.
He was born in Garfield, New Jersey, and, in the early 1940's, moved with his family to Deposit, where he graduated from high school in 1945.
After high school, Bob served for 13 months in the military.
Under the GI Bill, he attended Hartwick College and later National Science Foundation grants enabled him to earn his doctorate from Penn State.
Bob started teaching at Unadilla High School as the science teacher and he remained with the district, now Unatego, until his retirement in 1988. He was very proud of the numerous students who went on to distinguished careers in the sciences and he was twice selected as Teacher of the Year by his students. In 2016, the Unadilla Alumni Association honored him as an Outstanding Teacher of Unadilla Central School.
Bob served twice on the board for The Hospital in Sidney and he was active with the Tri-Town Theatre, frequently working behind the scenes in set construction.
In addition to attending Elderhostels and craft schools with Sue, Bob became an accomplished woodworker in retirement. He enjoyed making furniture and became known for the 75 plus stools he made as a thank you gift for the many who helped them rebuild after the first Sidney flood.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; and his children, Mark, Patricia (James) Lyle, Christine (Joseph) Baldwin, Stephen (Jill), Maria (Timothy) May and Andrew; stepdaughters, Rebecca Negri and Sarah Negri; brother, Frank (Jean); one niece; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Rosemary Waters.
The family extends deep appreciation to the staff at Oxford for their compassionate care and support during his residency.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bob's name may be made to the Residents Fund, c/o NYS Veterans Home, 4207 St. Hwy. 220, Oxford, NY 13830.
In accordance with Bob's wishes, he donated his body to the Upstate Medical facility in Syracuse.

Class of '86 Teacher of the Year and we couldn't have chosen any one better! Doc had high expectations of every student and only after the work was done, would find the time to put the chalk down and tell a joke or chat for a little bit. His smile was contagious! I'm glad to know that he lived a full and happy life; he certainly had an impact on me. God Bless you Doc and thank you for not only your teaching service, but that in the military too. πŸ™πŸ»πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸ«

A cornerstone of Unatego High School! Vivid memories of Doc Sklenarik! The teacher you were afraid to get... but then found out the treasure that he actually was!! Taking physics while having cancer my senior year - he showed no favoritism for anyone - but had a sweet side through his strength and rigidness. Pushed us to do the best we could do. Rest in Peace Doc. You will be missed.

I was so blessed to have had Bob as my Chemistry teacher. (1955). Over the past 30 years We would stop in and say Hello to Bob when we visited our farm in Unadilla. Bob was very special to us. Vern and I were so proud to receive one of his masterpiece cane and stool,
May you rest in peace.

Unadilla was blessed in multiple ways by by the brilliance and dedication of our science teacher ( Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) , and JV Football Coach, Bob Sklenarik. Even after he earned his Doctorate, he remained humble, stating β€œIt only means I know more and more about less and less.” Thanks again for everything!

Bob was a tremendous life influence, not only as an excellent teacher, but also as a compassionate and warm individual. He asked thoughtful questions and probed the answers (the follow-up). He created a safe space for everyone in his classroom, had extracurricular experiments for those who were interested, and taught all of us with an energy and intensity that is still memorable today. I particularly remember the after school science hours where we learned not to trust our eyes, or our first impression; but to look beyond and ask more questions. By revealing to us our potential, he encouraged us to go further. Thank you Bob.
