DAVENPORT CENTER - Sidney W. Utter, 76, of Davenport Center passed away Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Oct. 18, 1941 in Oneonta, the son of the late Sidney B. and Dorothy (Eggler) Utter.
Sid attended Charlotte Valley Central School. In Oct. 1958, he enlisted in the United States Army and served 13 months in Korea. Following his honorable discharge, he began working for the D&H Railroad.
Sid was an independent truck driver for more than 50 years, but for the last three years he drove bus for the City of Oneonta.
For 19 years he was a Master Sergeant for the New York Guard, retiring in 2012.
On Aug. 13, 1988, Sidney married Barbara Quick in Davenport.
He was an avid gun collector, history buff and enjoyed discussing politics. But what meant the most to Sid was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he gave a different nickname.
Sid was a member of the Sidney VFW.
Sidney is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Jane Utter of Davenport Center; seven children, Chon M. Taylor of Oneonta, Terri J. (Pepe) Burgher of Portlandville, Naomi L. Castle and Robert Dickson of Bainbridge, Edie M. (Bill) Halstead of Davenport, Susan (Ronald) Carey of Davenport, Chad L. (Sarah) Winne of Davenport Center, Brett C. (Hope) Winne of Davenport Center; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Bonnie (James) Weibel of Guilford; one uncle, John Powers of Oneonta; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, Sidney C. "Chuckie" Utter; and two brothers, Raymond Utter and Alfred Quick.
Calling hours will be from noon until 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.
Funeral services will immediately follow with the Rev. Steve Estes officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
