Stuart Ray's Story
MILLS RIVER, N.C. - Stuart Ray Gardner Sr., of Mills River, North Carolina, passed away peacefully following a long illness, Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, at his home.
He was born Jan. 3, 1932, in Laurens, the son of Robert and Annette (Blanchard) Gardner.
He was a Korean War veteran receiving several service medals including the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Hammon); two sons, Stuart (Gail) of Matthews, North Carolina and Michael (Linda) of Oradell, New Jersey; four grandchildren, Christopher (Jessie) Gardner of Matthews, North Carolina, Chad Gardner of Matthews, North Carolina, Ryan Gardner of Oradell, New Jersey and Ashley Gardner of Oradell, New Jersey; and great-grandson, Reilly Gardner of Matthews, North Carolina. He is also survived by his sister, Neva (Eugene) of Ontario, California; several nieces and nephews.
Stuart owned Gardner Building & Remodeling for most of his work life and later specialized his business to Gardner Plumbing & Heating in Oneonta for many years before retiring and moving to North Carolina.
Stuart was Cub Scout master and volunteer for many years with his sons in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. He was a past president and long-standing member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Oneonta and helped in the town of Oneonta's first attempt to obtain its own fire department.
He loved riding with his wife on their Honda Goldwing motorcycle and traveling with the Retread Motorcycle Club or the Susquenango Family Motorcoach Club and they traveled to 48 states meeting some of the nicest people in this wonderful country.
Stuart was predeceased by his parents; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Stuart wanted no services and requested any donations in his memory be made to the Hendersonville Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 1512, Hendersonville, NC 28793, in lieu of flowers.
