Thomas Oscar Malz

EAST MEREDITH - Thomas Oscar Malz, 88, of East Meredith, passed away on July 24, 2019, with his wife and children by his side.
He was born in New York City, son of Oscar T. Malz and Louise Schroeder. He grew up in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx.
From 1951 through 1955, he served in the Air Force during the Korean War being stationed in Japan. After being honorably discharged Thomas worked for Pan American Airlines as a cargo handler for 36 years until the company went bankrupt. He then went to work part-time as a hall monitor at Mepham High School in Bellmore for 20 years. Before moving to East Meredith in 2016 Thomas and his wife resided in Merrick for 55 years.
Thomas was a kind man who gave to others. He actively participated in the food pantry at Sacred Heart Church in Merrick. He helped a local family on his day off for years assisting in physical therapy. And he always slipped a few bucks to anyone he sensed had a need.
He is survived by his wife of more than 58 years, Grace Malz; his five children, Joan (Tony) Greco in East Meredith, Carol (Mike Empey) Malz in Davenport, Susan (Patrick) Mehr in Massapequa Park, Diane (Frank) Gregov in Merrick, and Thomas (Gina) Malz in East Setaucket; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Thomas enjoyed being around family and promoted opportunities to get together. He visited his extended family in the Bronx weekly after taking his mother to see his sister who struggled with schizophrenia. Often this was done with his wife and five children in the back of the station wagon.
He is also survived by his sister, Rita Errico of Roxbury, Connecticut.
He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Malz.
A Catholic service will be held at noon, Friday, Aug. 16, at Hall and Peet Funeral Home in Delhi. A service will follow in East Meredith Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
