William "Bill"'s Story
ONEONTA - "The memory of a good person is a blessing," Proverbs 10:7.
William "Bill" L. Meade, 72, of Oneonta, passed peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born in Endicott, the son of the late Ernest and Lillian Meade of Newark Valley.
Bill was a graduate of SUNY Delhi and also attended Clemson University, where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering.
He was employed by SJ Groves and Sons Construction Company and Labor Local 17 Union, performing heavy and highway construction projects across the country and overseas.
A U.S. Army veteran, Bill served as Chaplain for the Oneonta American Legion Post 259.
Bill's genuine, kind and generous nature made him liked by everyone he knew.
He could build or fix anything as well as run any piece of equipment. He took pride in his accomplishments and hard work.
He was a member of the BPOE 1312 Oneonta Elks Lodge and the Sixth Ward Athletic Club.
Bill is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy; son, Brian (Lea) of Long Island; daughter, Alison of Oneonta; grandchildren, Thomas, Taylor, Elliana; and his siblings, Shirley Adamek, Kathy (Bill) L'Amoreaux, Willard (Lois), and Chuck (Sue). He was also deeply loved by his brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and countless friends.
Friends are invited to greet the family from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 18, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.
A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Donna Martin officiating.
Burial will take place at a later date in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
The family thanks the Bassett Hospital Special Care Unit staff and Bill's doctors for their kind, compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's memory are asked to be made to the Oneonta American Legion Post 259, Elm Park United Methodist Church or Catskill Area Hospice.
