William's Story

LAURENS - William P. Gravelin Jr., 73, of Laurens, passed away peacefully within the comfort of his own home surrounded by his loving family on Dec. 5, 2017.
Bill was born on Sept. 28, 1944, in Santa Monica, California, to the late William and Barbara (Colyer) Gravelin.
On Sept. 26, 1964, Bill married the former Donna L. Bullis in West Oneonta. It was a marriage full of love for more than 50 years.
Everyone that knew Bill knew about his dedication to the Laurens Fire Department. He was a 50-plus year member of the fire department and held many important roles throughout his time there. His positions included secretary/treasurer, treasurer for the emergency squad, bingo coordinator and at one time he was treasurer for the fire district. His stubborn personality, blunt honesty and sarcastic sense of humor kept the fire department and his family in line and on a straight and narrow path.
Bill was employed by Keith Clark Inc. in Sidney as a first pressman.
In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling, woodworking/carpentry. He built his own home and helped many others build theirs too. Bill loved playing cards, puzzles, paint-by-number, string art, and most of all playing with his grandchildren on their yearly vacation in Canada.
Bill leaves behind his loving wife, Donna; children, Cheryl (Greg) Strong, Denise (Rob) White, Warren (Carrie) Gravelin; grandchildren, Kyle, David, Ashley, Annie, Samantha, Tyler, Heather, Skyler, Colby, Brooke, Kira and Miranda; seven great-grandchildren, Alexander, Olivea, Audrie, Owyn, Azekiel, Lynn and Ann Marie; sister-in-law, JoAnn Gravelin, very dear friend, Dana; several close friends; nieces, nephews, cousins; and the members of the fire department and emergency squad.
He was predeceased by his brother, David Gravelin.
A service in memory of Bill will be held at 2 p.m., Dec. 16, at the Laurens Fire Department, 34 Main St., Laurens.
Donations in memory of Bill may be made to the Laurens Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 164, Laurens, NY 13796 or the Laurens Fire Department, P.O. Box 254, Laurens, NY 13796.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
