Arlyn M. Wade

GILBERTSVILLE - Arlyn M. Wade, a resident at Norwich Rehabilitation and Nursing Center since 2016, previously from Gilbertsville, died following a brief illness on the morning of Dec. 3, 2022. She was 95 years old.
Arlyn Ida Matteson was born on March 24, 1927, to Charles Berton Matteson and Clara Keach Matteson of Rockdale.
Arlyn graduated from Mount Upton Central School.
She moved to Jacksonville, Florida, for several years where she had her two sons before returning to New York. She and her two sons moved to Maple Grove in the early 1950's to live with her sister, Ruthie, her husband, Bob Hoyt, and their three children, who she loved liked her own. Arlyn took care of the children for several years while Ruth and Bob went to work.
When the youngest began school, she took a job in the school cafeteria which allowed her to work mother's hours so she could be home with the five children before and after school. Their house was often full of rowdy youngsters who all felt welcome at the home.
In 2005, Arlyn and her sister Ruthie, reluctantly left the country life and made the move to the village of Gilbertsville, where they enjoyed keeping track of the foot traffic and other activity on the corner of Spring Street and Vine. In addition to working in the school cafeteria, Arlyn also worked at Musson, Faber and Teed as a bookkeeper, as a cook for Mr. and Mrs. Jack Rummery for several years and eventually at Doc Naylor's for many years. She eventually cut back to part-time in her 80's, and retired from there.
Throughout her life, Arlyn's main interests were her family and her church. She was a faithful, long-standing member of the Seventh Day Adventist in Otego which moved to Oneonta. She was a sabbath schoolteacher for many years as well as secretary/treasurer of the sabbath school and served on the board of the church. She also enjoyed attending the concerts and sporting events of her sons, nieces and nephews, as well as her great-nieces and nephews. When possible, she visited with her sons and grandchildren who lived out-of-state.
Arlyn is survived by her children, George (Linda) Wade of Leitchfield, Kentucky, and their children, Jennifer Camas and Vanessa Wade of Kentucky, \Erin (Trent) Joslin and their son, Connor of Arizona; Chuck (Lynn) Wade of Riverside, Rhode Island and son, Clayton; niece, Helen (Jim) Groff of Franklin; and sister, Irene Johnson. Arlyn is also survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews, who she loved dearly, Bill Musson (Jan Marie Costello) and Jan's children, Casey (Laura) Costello and children, Ash and Iris; and Whitney Costello; Sue Hoyt (Kent Hoyt), their children, Sandy (Andy) Meyers and children Andrew, Kyle, and Nicole; Laura Hoyt (John) and daughter, Mackenzie Graves and son, Joseph Elias Reiss; Kelly Hoyt (Anthony) and their daughter, Zeta Sue Clary; great-nephew, Dakoda (Kent Hoyt Jr); Heather Thomson and children, Bronson, Cameron, and Annika; Dillon (Amanda) Groff and children, Carter, Tyler, and Ryan, and numerous other nieces, nephews, extended family and family of extended family.
Arlyn was predeceased by her sisters and their spouses, Ruth (Bob) Hoyt, Janice Peckham; brothers and their wives, Keith (Frances) Matteson, Douglas (Jeannette) Matteson, Ellsworth (Eleanor) Matteson, and Dever (Ruth) Matteson. Her niece, Jan Marie Costello and her son, Tyler Costello, nephew, Kent Hoyt Sr. and his son, Kent Jr., also recently predeceased Arlyn.
A memorial service will take place in the late spring. Details will follow.
