Arthur G. Gage Obituary
Agawam, MA - AGAWAM, Mass. - Arthur (Art) Gage, 78, of Agawam, passed away peacefully at home on July 27, 2025. Art was born in Oneonta in 1946, where he lived until he graduated from Hartwick College with a bachelor's degree and moved to Agawam, where he met his wife, Margaret (Maggie). He went on to complete a masters degree at WPI and was a beloved physics teacher at Agawam High School for 35 years.
Art genuinely loved teaching and had a way of making science fun and applicable. He often used the Agawam traffic rotary as a real- life example of centrifugal force in action and taught students how to calculate their "apparent weight" by standing on a scale in a moving elevator. His goal as an educator was to connect science to his student's everyday lives. He loved his career so much that he retired from Agawam High School and continued to teach physics for another six years at Newington High School in Connecticut. He took immense pride in hearing from former students, many of whom reached out to him over the years to thank him for the positive impact he had on helping to shape their career paths. Art will be remembered as an inspirational educator whose caring and charismatic nature touched the lives of his students and colleagues alike.
Art loved nothing more than spending his summers at the family's lake house outside of Cooperstown. For over 60 years he spent summers at the lake building lifelong friendships and creating beautiful memories while watching his own children and grandchildren do the same. Art also loved watching the Red Sox and Patriots as well as participating in fantasy baseball and football leagues with friends.
Art was predeceased by his son, Thomas Gage; parents, Harold and Anne Gage; and sister, Joanne Hartman. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Maggie Gage; daughter, Lindy (Steve) Godlewski; and grandchildren, Benjamin and Caroline Godlewski.
All services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Amedisys Foundation (Beacon Hospice of Springfield, MA) or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
A heartfelt thank you to the staff from Beacon Hospice for their exceptional care and support.
