Garrattsville - GARRATTSVILLE - Bertha Timer George, 103, passed away Nov. 19, 2024 at Groton Community Health Care Center. She was born Dec. 24, 1920 in the town of Laurens; the daughter of William and Hulda (Manke) Timer. She married Robert A. George, a World War II veteran, of New Lisbon on May 12, 1945, in the Matthews Lutheran Church in Laurens.
Together, they bought a farm on Route 16 in Garrattsville and stayed there for 30 years. For the next 13 years they lived in a house they built on land reserved from their farm. Bertha was a graduate of Laurens Central School, Class of 1937 and a graduate of Oneonta Normal School, Class of 1940. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1957 and her Master of Science in 1972 from the State University of Oneonta.
Betha is survived by her sons, Larry E. George and James W. George; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Robert A. George, in February 2006 and her son, Richard A. George in October 2014.
Bertha wished there to be no calling hours, but all are invited to her funeral service at noon Friday, Nov. 29, and officiated by Certified Lay Minister, Penny Harrington, at the Johnston & Stanimer Funeral Home, 60 Broad St. in Morris. Her burial and service of committal will follow at the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Garrattsville Emergency Squad, the Garrattsville Fire Department and the Morris United Methodist Church.
