Betty was born Dec. 20, 1932 in Oneonta, to C. Aaron and Bernice (McRorie) Foster.
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, William; eldest son, W. Dale; grandson, Tyler William; and brother, Dick Foster.
She is survived by daughter, Mary (Gerard); sons, Scott (Danielle), Kevin, Brett (Erin), Timothy, and Theodore (Jessica); grandchildren, Jason, Brendan, Brielle, Makenzie, Marlee, Ian, Emma, Brittany, Aaron, Brett Jr., Jesse, Alex, Julianna, Angelina, Adelyn, Jocelyn; great-grandchildren, Maia, Noah, Jordyn, Jonathan, Jacob, Joseph, Koa, Leah Dale; sister, Joan Riesdorph; brother, Fred Foster; many nieces, nephews, cousins and her beloved and spoiled "critters" Bootsie and Goldie.
Betty attended Bugbee School, and graduated from Oneonta High School, designing the yearbook cover and class ring for a class of 1950. She received a BS in Home Economics from SUCO in 1954. She taught home economics on Long Island until marrying her high school sweetheart, Will, on Dec. 30, 1954. Putting her career on hold, they return to Oneonta to raise their family of seven children.
While being a stay-at-home Mom, Betty accomplished many things. She was active with the PTA, sewed costumes for school plays, substituted in the Oneonta City School District, and served on the school board. A creative achievement during this time was winning a contest for the official Bicentennial Celebration Medallion, an honor, congratulated and recognized by US Congress.
In her 40's and faced with an "empty nest", Betty became an LPN working at A.O. Fox hospital and later joined Delaware Opportunities as a Health Service Manager, retiring at the age of 77. She was a member of the American Legion, Ladies Elks, American Association University Women, SUNY Alumni, and hospice volunteer. She never stopped learning; taking CCAL classes and defensive driving at 92.
Mom was our advisor, confidante, inspiration, advocate, teacher, role model, and best friend. A woman of many talents, she loved to paint, craft, sew, and garden and took pride and decorating her porch as the seasons changed. Mom enjoyed visiting with others, good jokes, bourbon Presbyterian's, daily walks along the Charlotte Creek with her dogs, and social gatherings with her revered potato salad in tow. She was actively independent for 15 years, maintaining her own household. Mom lived with grace, poise, steadfast courage, and kindness; her inner beauty emanating through her smile. Thanks, mom... We lived it, we loved it, but most of all we loved you.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. A private committal service will be held in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
