Charles B. Abrams WILLIAMSBURG, Va. _ Charles B. Abrams passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2011, at his residence in the Spring Arbor Assisted Living facility in Williamsburg, Va. Charlie was born in Albany on Dec. 27, 1924, to George and Elizabeth Abrams. He was raised on the family farm outside of Greenville, and graduated from high school there in 1941. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served his country in World War II in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned home and married his childhood sweetheart, Pearl Abrams, who died in 2009, after 63 years of marriage. Charlie and Pearl sold the farm and moved to Richfield Springs in 1952. An entrepreneur at heart, Charlie was trained at Cornell University in the new agricultural field of artificial insemination of cattle. He built a thriving territory working seven days a week among the many dairy farms in Otsego County, while still finding time to be active in the community and the local Republican Party. Anxious to own his own business, Charlie undertook a new career in the early 1960s and purchased the Andrews Press and its two Pennysaver publications. Charlie learned the advertising and publishing businesses from the ground up and ultimately owned three highly successful area Pennysavers. In 1983, Charlie and Pearl retired to Norfolk, Va., and enjoyed making new friends there as well as being active in the lives of their children and grandchildren. Besides his wife, Charlie's great loves were serving his community, a good challenge, Dixieland jazz, playing the trumpet, the Marine Corps, a problem that needed solving, the song Stardust, something to fix and a great joke. Left to miss him are his children, Paulette Culbert and husband John, Carole Molnar and husband Steve, Barry Abrams and special friend Betty Schermerhorn; grandchildren, Mike Culbert and wife Catherine, David Culbert and wife Danielle, Matthew Molnar, Daniel Molnar, Chad Abrams, Patrick Jarvis and wife Sara; great-grandchildren Dylan, Addison and Austin Culbert, Charlie Culbert and Serenity Jarvis. A memorial service will be held at J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home in Richfield Springs at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18, 2011, with interment in Lakeview Cemetery immediately following.
