Jamesville, New York - JAMESVILLE - Daniel Hayes Gregory II, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and physician, passed away peacefully Jan. 29, 2025, at the age of 92. Born Dec. 18, 1932, in Watertown, he was the son of Daniel Hayes Gregory and Jesse Ermentraut Gregory.

Dan is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Jacqueline Hueter Gregory; four children, Trey (Margie), Heidi, John (Michele), and Bonnie Buelow (Kyle); and six cherished grandchildren, Hanna, Hayes, Jhala, Jai, Lincoln, and Harris.

Dan's life journey began in Watertown. In 1936, his family welcomed his younger sister, Sandra Elizabeth Gregory Goulet.

Always chasing opportunities for personal growth, he became an Eagle Scout, acquired his boat captain's license and developed a passion for photography that culminated with Kodak's Junior National photo award with the photo being placed in Grand Central Station. As a boat captain, he conducted tours along the St. Lawrence, sharing his knowledge of the area's history and folklore.

The next phase of focus for Dan was academics. This started with attending Hamilton College in 1951. Between his sophomore and junior college years, he served two years in the US Army as part of the GI bill. He was stationed at Fort Dix during the Korean War and later guarded the Panama Canal. He returned to Hamilton College and graduated in 1957. He then pursued his medical degree at the University of Virginia, where he met his future wife, Jacqueline Hueter, a medical technologist. They married Aug. 20, 1960, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Hampton, Virginia. Dan graduated from medical school in 1962 and began his internship at the Medical College of Virginia. He continued his training with a residency at the VA Hospital and the University of Minnesota, specializing in gastroenterology.

In 1969, Dan was invited to join the academic and medical staff at the University of New Mexico Medical School in Albuquerque, which also involved research contributing to the development of the world's first H2 blocker. Later he returned with his young family to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. In 1978 he transitioned his career to a private gastroenterology practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and in 1998, he returned to academic medicine at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. Prior to his retirement from Bassett in 2013, Dan finalized his career by establishing a niche gastroenterology service with the revolutionary "PillCam" (capsule endoscopy) nicely combining his love for photography and patient care.

Dan's relentless pursuit of knowledge and love for medicine was reflected in his devotion and teachings in academic medicine and consistent, compassionate care for his community and colleagues for more than 50 years. These core values were the underpinnings of Dan's life philosophy and both influential and inspirational to his children and grandchildren alike.

Out of the hospital he prioritized his time to be with family and friends. Activities of interest included boating, biking, bread making, writing, dogs, the pursuit of healthy living and all things related to the St. Lawrence River.

Our blessings and love follow him, but his legacy of words and his strength of being will be with family and friends forever with cherished memories.

There will be no calling hours. Service arrangements will take place at a later date at Christ Church in Cooperstown.
