Dorothy Mae Schick Obituary

Oneonta - ONEONTA - Dorothy Mae Schick, 97, of Oneonta, passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, at home, surrounded by her family.

Born on May 27, 1926, in Westford, she was the daughter of the late Glenn and Alice (Skellie) Mathewson.

Dorothy grew up on the family's small dairy farm in Westford. Inside chores were proudly her responsibility. Dorothy played the flute and piccolo in school band as well as piano at home.

She had many food service jobs. However, the standout and much discussed job was her time at Bresee's Health Bar in Oneonta. Dorothy was responsible for baking up to 100 pies on Thursdays, their busiest day. Her pie recipe, which she knew by heart, was a favorite of many.

For 30 straight years, Dorothy made her famous knitted dishcloths, making up to one a day, to be gifted or sold. If you were lucky, you were one of the hundreds who received her special creations.

Dorothy was predeceased by her first husband, Norbert Bidwell, and second husband, Clifford Yager.

Dorothy accompanied the love of her life, Raymond Schick, across country to Utah where they married and spent almost 20 happy years until his death in 1997. She immediately called her son, Glenn Bidwell, to bring her home, where she would be surrounded by family and friends for her remaining years. He passed in 2018. Dorothy was also predeceased by her sisters, Thelma Alger and Esther Brooker; and brother, Gordon Mathewson.

She is survived by her brother, Peter (Diana) Mathewson; sister, Olive Crews; granddaughter Kelly (Lary) Gell; great-grandsons, Johnathan (Megan Christiana) and Quintin Gell; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by step-granddaughters, Regina (Boyd) Bankston and Betty (David) Polk and their families.

A special thank you goes to Olive Crews for her five-year slumber party with Dorothy. Her presence allowed Dorothy to stay at home through her final years. Her care and attention were much appreciated by the entire family.

A graveside service will be held in Milford Center Cemetery at 11 a.m., Saturday Jan. 6.
