ONEONTA - Edward A. Thompson, 72, of Oneonta, passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

Edward was born on Aug. 30, 1949, in Oneonta, the son of the late Richard and Frances (Harmon) Thompson.

He proudly served his country from 1969-1971 in the United States Army. While enlisted he received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and was an expert marksman with the M-16.

Edward was an easy going, gentle and kind person that would help anyone. He retired from Tri-County Communications, Inc. as a service operations coordinator. He previously had owned and operated Thompson's Outboard Sales and Service for several years and took great pride in his work on boat motors.

Ed was an all-around handyman who enjoyed tinkering on anything. He was often called upon by family and friends to help them out when they couldn't get something running. If he couldn't fix it throw it away. (Which didn't happen very often if ever) He loved fixing things he enjoyed the challenge of getting things back in working order. Ed's other hobby was cutting and splitting firewood with his buddy, Terry. It was his peace and serenity and a good workout. It made him happy to look at his hard work.

Ed's main passion, besides being a constant supporter of his grandchildren at all their sporting events and special functions, was bowling!! (and drinking Coors Light) Ed was been a lifelong member of the United States Bowling Congress. "ET" was an amazing and accomplished bowler. He will forever hold the highest series to be bowled at Holiday Lanes in Oneonta with an 864. The number of 300, 299, 298 games and 700 and 800 series he recorded was astonishing.

Over the last few years he became hooked on playing cornhole and was equally good at that game. Ed was often seen driving his "babies" around the area and occasionally at a car show or two. His 1964 Chevy Impala and his 2008 Ford 'Stang brought him much enjoyment over the years. He loved it when Addison would say to him as he was pulling out of our driveway "Rev it up Pop-Pop"...and of course he would oblige and burn some rubber while heading up the road.

Ed is survived by his pride and joy, his daughter, Stacy Platt and son-in law, John. He will be missed dearly by his loving companion, Jeanette Thomas. Also surviving are his brothers, John Thompson, and Richard Thompson; sister, Nancy Thompson; grandchildren, Michael Rose, Derrick Rose and Addison Platt.

He was affectionately known as "Uncle Daddy" to Stacy's sisters, Stephanie Fraser, and Sara Norton; Stacy, Stephanie and Sara's mother, Patricia Burnett (Dixson); numerous bowling buddies; and his two lifelong best friends, Terry Bryant, and Doug Hultman.

Family and friends are invited to call from 1 to 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2, at Johnston & Stanimer Funeral Home, 60 Broad St., Morris.
