ONEONTA - Emerson Shivers Jr., 65, of Oneonta, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, at Chestnut Park Nursing & Rehabilitation in Oneonta of cancer diagnosed in August.

Emerson was born April 19, 1957, in Mt. Holly, New Jersey, the son of Irene (Shover) Shivers and the late Emerson Sr.

He lived on the farm in New York from 1960 to 1967 until his family returned to Medford, New Jersey.

He was a 1975 graduate of Shawnee High School, Medford, and worked for Atlanta Carting, Gibbsboro, for a time before moving to Philadelphia for several years and then Oneonta.

Emerson was a very compassionate person, always ready to help if he could. He had a great sense of humor even though he was plagued by many health issues during his lifetime. Some of his favorite times were spending holidays with his family at the farm.

He is survived by his mother, Irene; brother, Joe and his wife, Meg, and their children, Meredith and Joshua Shivers. He is also survived by several aunts, an uncle, and several cousins.

A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 29, at Treadwell United Methodist Church, 68 Church St., Treadwell, with the Rev. Dr. John Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Emerson's family thanks his many doctors, Bassett Hospital nurses on floors 3 and 5, as well as the staff at Chestnut Park. Also a special thank you goes to Pete and Rosa for their friendship over the years.

Donations is his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or Treadwell Fire and Emergency Squad.
