Esther M.  Downie
RICHMONDVILLE - Esther (Terri) M. Downie, 85, formerly of Richmondville, died on Monday, Dec. 9, 2019, at Ellis Hospital, following a brief illness.
She was born on June 27, 1934, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Joseph and Ruth (Hanscom) Horton.
Esther was a graduate of Otego High School.
She continued her education, receiving a bachelor's degree in nursing from Columbia University.
Esther went on to become one of the first nurse practitioners in New York State.
For many years she was employed at Planned Parenthood in Cobleskill. There she established the prenatal clinic and provided education and services to promote women's health.
Summers spent in Maine were the highlight of the year. She was passionate about fishing, having taught her family and friends how to catch bass. Many summer days were spent fishing and boating on Hadley Lake. Spending time with family and friends brought her great pleasure, along with playing games, especially cribbage.
Esther was an active member of Cobleskill United Methodist Church, having served in various capacities.
On April 25, 1957, she married her beloved husband, James B. Downie. Together for the next 43 years, they raised their family and were actively involved in their community. He predeceased her on January 25, 2001.
Forever cherishing her memories are her three children, Laurie (Mark) Pracher of Richmondville, John D. (Suzanne) Downie of Painted Post and Linda (Glenn) Meadows of Portsmouth, New Hampshire; sister, Martha (Bruce) Klipec of Hartville, Ohio; five grandchildren, Erin Pracher (Tim), Stephen (Rachel) Pracher, Kate Pracher (Robert), Carolina Downie and Juliet Downie; and four great-grandchildren, Caden and Nathan Day and Hadley and Sawyer Pracher.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, at Cobleskill United Methodist Church, 109 Chapel St., Cobleskill, with the Rev. Anna Blinn Cole officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, at the church.
Spring interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.
Memorial contributions in Esther's name may be made to Planned Parenthood of Mohawk Hudson, 1040 State St., Schenectady, NY 12307, or Cobleskill United Methodist Church, 109 Chapel St., Cobleskill, NY.
Arrangements are entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.
