TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Barney passed away at age 92 on Oct. 3, 2016, at Miracle Hill in Tallahassee, Florida.

Barney was born on May 28, 1924, in Afton. He was the fourth of seven boys born to Jessie and Olive (Finch) Knapp.

He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941, served in the Special Forces and First Ranger Battalion. He fought in the European Theater of War for 41 months, the last six months liberating Norway. He later served in the Korean Conflict. Barney had a deep love for his country and continued serving through the American Legion.

He married Marjorie Gray of Laurens, in 1946. They had five children, Samuel, Susan, Sharon, Eugene II (Crockett) and Daniel. His wife preceded him in death in 1965. He married Irene Brown in 1968 and she passed in 2009.

Surviving Barney are his daughters, Susan Hontz (Brian) of Pennsylvania, Sharon Miller (Walt) of Florida, and Irene Handler (Jim) of New York; sons, Eugene Knapp (Karen) and Thomas Knapp (Jen) of New York; stepchildren, Connie Dabreau, Pam Miller and Jane Bamberger, all of New York; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are special sisters-in-law, Dr. Terry Wolfe of California and Jane Knapp of New York; and special friend, Darlene Webb of Virginia.

He is predeceased by his parents; sons, Samuel and Daniel Knapp; and brothers, Daniel, Harry, Frank, June, Hugh and Jack Knapp.

Barney will be interred in the Laurens Cemetery with military honors at a later date.
