HARPERSFIELD - Eugene A. Robinson, 70, following a brief illness, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 30, 2022, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.
He was born on Jan. 13, 1952, in Oneonta, the son of Harold and Helen Robinson.
Gene began his work career at Medical Coaches as a spray painter. He continued his employment at Story House Corp. before working at Corning in Oneonta, until his retirement.
Gene always had a smile on his face, an interesting sense of humor, a kind word for everyone and last but not least, pockets full of Werther's candies. He would pass these out to anyone and everyone and this earned him the nickname of "The Candy Man."
Gene had a passion for music beginning in his teens and lasting until his late 30's. He played electric keyboard for the band JR and the Night Raiders, alongside his brothers, JR and Lyle, sister in-law, Betty and friend, Gary Bennett.
Gene enjoyed fishing and you could frequently find him walking to his favorite fishing hole with pole and fishing bag in tow.
Gene also loved watching and cheering at sporting events, particularly those in which his grandchildren participated. Seeing and spending time with his grandchildren brought Gene much joy. He was extremely proud of all of their accomplishments
Gene is survived by his daughters, Linda Robinson (William Giesse) and Wanita Robinson (Michael Lander); grandchildren, Melissa Sperry (Corey Sullivan), Austin Sperry and Teddi Robinson. He is also survived by his sisters, Patricia Craft and Victoria Zimmerman (Charlie); and brother; JR Robinson (Betty).
Other surviving relatives include Joyce and Gary Tompkins, Ann and Carl Cole, Donna and Glenn Williams, Keith and Constance McLean, John McLean and Rose Suchy; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Helen Robinson; brother, Lyle Robinson; sisters, Anne Robinson and Sarah McLean; and relatives, Ken McLean, Theodora McLean and Barbara McLean.
Gene's wishes were to be cremated and his ashes scattered at his favorite fishing hole.
A simple memorial service will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Jan. 7, at Word of Faith Church, 6568 St. Hwy 7, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Susquehanna SPCA, 5082-5088 St. Hwy 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.
