SCHOHARIE - Eugene W. Dietz, 95, formerly of Schoharie, passed away peacefully Saturday Aug. 27, 2016, at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown, where he had resided since 2012.

Mr. Dietz was born March 29, 1921, in Amsterdam, a son of William Walter and Janie Mae (Wilson) Dietz.

He grew up in Central Bridge and attended the local one-room schoolhouse and later graduated from Schoharie High School in 1937.

He also completed many courses offered during his tenure at General Electric Company in Schenectady. Gene retired from General Electric Co. after more than 40 years of service in various positions in Methods for Cutters and Grinders Operations.

Gene was a member of the Schoharie United Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon, Elder and Mission Fund member. He was a member of Schoharie Valley Lodge No. 491 F&AM, Cypress Temple Albany, Cypress Temple Band, Scottish Rite Valley of Schenectady, Schoharie Valley Concert Band and the GE Quarter Century Club. He was a member of the Cobleskill Golf & Country Club and served on the board of directors. He was the second president of the Schoharie Fire Department and a member of the Schoharie Valley Crop Dusters and Schoharie Kiwanis Club.

He married Violet (Klahr) Dietz on Oct. 12, 1941. Together they enjoyed many trips camping and traveling to the Jersey Shore and wintering in Winter Haven, Florida.

Vi predeceased him in 2008. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Donald and Walter.

Survivors include his daughter, Dawne M. Dietz of Cooperstown; one grandson, Joseph Abbott; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Joseph; sister-in-law, June (Gene) Amedio of Schoharie; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Linda Granquist.

A Masonic Funeral Rite followed by a memorial service will be held at 11a.m., Saturday Sept. 3, at the Schoharie United Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Schoharie. Inurnment will be in the Lutheran Cemetery.
