Gene Arthur Ouimet Obituary

Otego, NY - OTEGO - Gene A. Ouimet passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 28, 2026. Gene was born on Nov. 30, 1933, in Otego to the late Homer and Florida (Riel) Ouimet.

Gene is survived by his children, Cheryl Ouimet, Scott (Toni) Ouimet and Jeff Ouimet and his partner Betsy Woodard; and his brother, Donald Andre Ouimet. Gene is pre-deceased by his wife, Irma Ouimet, and brothers, Francis, Roland and Fred Ouimet.

He spent the last years of his life with his special friend, Jean Siems, who helped support him living in his own home until Feb. 2026, along with assistance from his aide and friend, Tara Nichols. He had many beloved friends and especially loved "having breakfast with the boys" every Tuesday.

He was a graduate of Otego High School, class of 1951, and served in the US Army 18th Airbourne Corps. He is a Hometown Hero and was very proud of his flag hanging on Main Street in Otego. Gene worked for the US Postal Service for 31 years in both Oneonta and Otego.

Gene loved to play and watch sports. He was an avid fan of both the NY Mets and NY Giants. Gene was a member of the Monday Night Football Club for 30 years with membership only permitted to NYG fans. He coached Otego Little League for 30 years, was a season ticket holder for the Oneonta Yankees, and he enjoyed attending Unatego High School sporting events.

Gene lived in Otego in his home at 6 Newland Street all his life and bought his family's home from his mother in 1961. In his later years, Gene loved to sit on his front porch waving and talking with neighbors who passed by. He and his wife Irma were snowbirds and spent winters in Florida for many years. Upon his return from these trips he would say, "Little Otego is big enough for me."

A memorial service will be held for Gene at the Evergreen Cemetery, Otego at a later date. Donations may be made in Gene's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

Gene's family has entrusted his care to Edd Stanimer of Johnston & Stanimer Funeral Home in Morris. For online condolences to the family visit www.JohnstonFH.com.
