ONEONTA - George Stoehr, 85, died from complications related to late-stage dementia after receiving compassionate care at Chestnut Park for the past eight months.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Sloan) of nearly 59 years; his children, Julie and Joel and their spouses, Peter Kaplan and Elizabeth Stoehr; and his granddaughters, Ella and Caroline Kaplan. Other survivors include Bruce and Jane Sloan, Jan Ballard, and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Amabel Stoehr; aunt Viola and uncle Fred Boos; in-laws, Roy and Katherine Sloan, brothers-in-law, Stub Ballard, Bob Sloan and Al Sloan, sisters-in-law, Alice Sloan and Nancy Sloan.

George grew up in Fairlawn and Ridgewood, New Jersey. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from SUNY Oneonta and dedicated himself to young people for 33 years as a teacher at Unatego Central School. George loved his family and was proud of his children and their spouses. He looked forward to a Manhattan at the end of the work day, rooting for the Mets and trips to Saratoga, St. Simons Island and Maine each year. He treasured his time spent with friends, but the role he treasured the most was being Bapa to his granddaughters Ella and Callie. May he rest in peace.
