Gregory Hooper Evans Obituary

Gregory Hooper Evans was born May 1,1947, in Danvers, Massachusetts. He was raised by his mother Barbara Hooper Walsh and his grandparents "Hoop" and "Mimi" Hooper on the family farm. After graduating from Danvers High School, he earned his associate degree at Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMass.

After graduation, Greg enlisted in the Navy. He served two tours in Vietnam stationed in DaNang (1968 -1970). While his time there was difficult and he carried a great deal of trauma home with him, he was also proud to serve his country.

On his return, Greg stayed in the Navy and was eventually stationed in Pensacola, Florida. It was here that he met his first wife, Laurie Ray. They had three children together, Phillip, Karen and Julie Evans.

After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1972, Greg settled in Massachusetts and started his career as a farm inspector for the USDA.

At that time, Greg also attended night school at Mount Wachusett and then Worcester State, earning his master's degree in history education. He also served with the National Guard at Fort Devens.

At Mount Wachusett, Greg met his future wife, Ellen Harris (nee McCarthy) and her three children, Bob, Fred, and Dwayne Harris. With moves from Massachusetts, to Maine, to Vermont, and finally to Coventry, Greg and Ellen's children always knew that they could come home any time for help, advice, care, and a good home-cooked meal.

After retiring from the USDA, Greg and Ellen spent their happiest years selling their homegrown and homemade goods at a number of farmers' markets in the Coventry area. Greg was a respected member of the community who could always be counted on to have some of the most delicious tomatoes available.

Greg died peacefully in his home on May 27, with his wife and his dogs.

Greg created a big space around himself, at 6",1' and having worked out to model himself after his idol Lou Ferrigno in his youth, his passing will make that space difficult for his family and friends to fill. He will be missed for his booming laugh, his bass voice singing out folk songs to his wife and children, his tremendous strength and capacity for hard work to provide for his family, and his generosity and kindness to everyone around him.

Greg is survived by his wife, Ellen Evans of Coventry; sons, Bob Harris of Wilmington, North Carolina, Phil Evans of Millis, Massachusetts, and Dwayne Harris of Barre, Vermont; daughters, Karen Evans and son-in-law, Jason Seeley of Brooklyn, and Julie Evans of Unadilla.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Bob and Brock Harris, Miguel Harris, and Carli Roberts (nee Harris) and Kyle Harris.

An avid dog owner and sometime breeder, Greg is also survived by his golden retrievers, Molly and Dylan, and his terrier, Buddy.

At Greg's request, there will be no formal services.
