Hazel Mae Jenkins Obituary

COBLESKILL - Hazel Mae Jenkins, 83, formerly of Early Woodlands in Cobleskill, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024, at Cooperstown Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing.

Born on Oct. 4, 1940, in Oneonta, she was the daughter of Robert Richard Conklin and Mae VanHoesen Conklin.

Graduating from Worcester Central School with Class of 1958, she was a lifelong resident of Schoharie County.

Hazel worked for New York State, serving in various departments.

She attended Cobleskill United Methodist Church.

Hazel was an avid quilter. She was a wonderful cook and baker with a generous heart. She was always willing to open her home to anyone in need. In her younger years she was a Boy Scout den mother and Girl Scout troop leader. She also enjoyed playing cards with her husband.

Hazel was married to Gerald William Jenkins Sr. in Worcester in 1960. He preceded her in death in 2002. Her son, Gerald William Jenkins Jr.; grandson, Nicholas Birsen; sisters, Mary Hanvey and Leona Pope; and brother, Richard Conklin, also predeceased her.

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Kim Birsen; sister, Margaret Herrala of Cobleskill; grandsons, Christopher Birsen, Gerald Jenkins III; great-granddaughters, Jane and Mae Jenkins; cousin, Charles (Kathy) VanHoesen; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Sharon Nesbitt; niece, Tamara Guerrero; as well as many other nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3, at Cobleskill United Methodist Church with Pastor Anna Blinn Cole officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends one hour before the service at the church.
