Herbert P. Lindstadt (Herbie) Obituary

Cooperstown, NY - COOPERSTOWN - Herbert P. Lindstadt, 75, died Nov. 19, 2025, at Cooperstown Center. He was born on Aug. 15, 1950, at Bassett Hospital, the son of Harry (Sr.) and Eloise (nee Loudon) Lindstadt and grew up in the hamlet of Bowerstown, where many wonderful memories and friends were made.

He attended the Cooperstown Central School system from kindergarten on and graduated in the Class of '69. A week after graduation, Herb and his best friends, Stewart Wayman and Scott Reed, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps under the "Buddy System." Herb served a tour of duty in Vietnam.

Following his service, he returned to Cooperstown and spent his career faithfully working for the family of Paul Fenimore Cooper, the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Otesaga Hotel.

Herb never married, rather he dedicated his free time (and then some) to volunteering. He was a lifelong member of the Cooperstown Fire Department, where he served in many capacities, including Chief, the Cooperstown Emergency Squad serving as Squad Captain, and as a member of Cooperstown VFW Post 7128, where he served as Commander. He was a modest and reluctant hero when he was credited with running into a burning building and "hauling" a man out literally seconds before a "flashover" consumed the structure.

Herb also greatly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He made friends easily, and enjoyed sharing a beer or two, a good cigar, a long conversation, and laughs. He especially loved spending time at the "Forest of the Dozen Dads" with his friends.

Herb is survived by his sister Judy (Richard); and brothers Harry (Lana) and Homer. He especially relished the time he spent with his nieces and nephews, Laura (Darren), Faye, Howard, Craig, Brian and Matt (Ashley). He was predeceased by his parents; brother Howard; and sister-in-law, Mavis Lindstadt (nee Gallup).

The family thanks all of his friends for their love and support. Special thanks are extended to Howie, Lori, Stew W., GSJ, Weeksie, Dave Shepard, Terry and Carter Bunn, Joe and Grammy Koffer, Nancy St. John and many more.

In accordance with his wishes, Herb will be buried with full military honors at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 21, in Gerald B. H. Soloman National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.
